TRURO CATHEDRAL CHOIR TO SING IN TORREVIEJA

The world-famous Choir of Truro Cathedral is coming to sing in Torrevieja during August to perform different programmes of beautiful choral music in the Church of the Immaculate Conception on the 24th at 22:00; in the Palacio de la Musica on the 25th at 20:30; and in the new Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the 26th at 20:30.

(ANGEL VOICES FROM TRURO TO TORREVIEJA

Do you listen to the Carol Service traditionally broadcast live on Christmas Eve from King's College, Cambridge? The original service wasn't held there but at Truro Cathedral, Cornwall, and Truro's world-famous choir is coming to sing in Torrevieja during August to perform programmes of beautiful choral music in the Church of the Immaculate Conception on the 24th at 22:00; in the Palacio de la Musica on the 25th at 20:30; and in the new Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the 26th at 20:30.)

The Choir of thirty professional singers includes eighteen boys and twelve men who sing at least seven services each week in the Cathedral. The Choir also broadcasts regularly and in the past year it has appeared on BBC 1 and 2 television as well as BBC Radio 3 and 4. In a recent 'Dessert Island Discs' programme, castaway Howard Goodall chose the Choir's recording of music by French composer Maurice Duruflé as his favourite disc.

The Choir has recorded a variety of CDs which have been received enthusiastically by critics across the UK and further afield. Classical music's most prestigious journal, 'Gramophone', has recently described Truro Cathedral Choir as "one of the best around" in its review of a new recording of music by Louis Vierne.

The Boy Choristers, who receive scholarships and bursaries, rehearse every morning at 8 o'clock for at least 45 minutes. Most afternoons they come straight from school to the Cathedral where they do their homework before the whole choir rehearses for 40 minutes before singing a service at 5.30 pm. The Choir sings two further services each Sunday during term time.

The Gentlemen of the Choir sing alto, tenor and bass. Seven of them are lay vicars who are based permanently in Cornwall, and five are choral scholars who sing with the renowned choir during their gap years before going to university. They hail from various parts of the UK and further a-field. All the men organise their lives, work, holidays and, indeed, their families, around the Choir's busy schedule of commitments.

Truro Cathedral Choir's tours in recent years have included singing in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Italy and the USA.

This will be the Choir’s first visit to Spain and Torrevieja is the only place where it will be singing. With music from the old to the new, these are events not to be missed.

Sheffield United FC Academy Spain's summer football program

If your kids are looking to keep fit this summer by playing football, Sheffield United FC Academy Spain have organised Saturday fun days, every Saturday morning from 1000am to 1230 pm, on the artificial grass at Torrevieja’s Infanta Christina sports complex.

The classes cater for all ages from 6 through 16, residents and visitors alike. One can just show up and join in as payment for the session is paid on the day, so no commitment to the program is necessary. These are designed as fun days, an opportunity to be coached in football skills but also to play ‘fun’ games within the level of the players attending.

For more information or to book a place on the summer scheme, please contact Program Director Robbie Burns on 692 507 439 or visit their web site on www.sufcspain.com.

My son and I shall be there in July, so maybe we'll see you there!

El Canto del Loco change concert date to August 6th, 2009

Although they may not be known to many ex-pats, in 2005 they won Best Spanish Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards and are one of the most popular bands in Spain.

If you’ve tickets or plans to go and see El Canto del Loco on July 15th,  you’d better start thinking aging as due to “technical difficulties” their concert has been rescheduled to August 6th, 2009, same time, same place; 22:30 hrs, in Parque Antonio Soria de Torrevieja.

Although they may not be known to many ex-pats, in 2005 they won Best Spanish Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards and are one of the most popular bands in Spain.  They have announced that this is to be their farewell tour so this opportunity may not arise again. The band mainly take their influences from other Spanish groups from the 1980s, mostly in style of ‘Power Pop’ and their five studio albums have gone on to sell more than a million copies making them one of the most successful bands currently on the Spanish music scene.
