Club Torrevieja’s Driver Awareness Program - Car Watch 2009

Club Torrevieja’s Driver Awareness Program

Torrevieja’s original international classic car club, Club Torrevieja, is continuing its Driver Awareness program with a timely reminder of how drivers, bikers and road users can stay both safe and secure this summer. Many times, especially when on holiday, we can relax too much and make ourselves easy pray for opportunist thieves, who are on the lookout for the unsuspecting. Follow these simple, commonsense words of advice and stay secure no matter where you are driving your car these summer months:

DRIVING – PARKING -

Lock your doors, boot and roll up windows when driving or leaving your car

Don't leave handbags in the front or back seats within view

Put all valuables in the boot

Never leave ignition keys in the car at petrol stations or to run into a shop

Never leave the engine running and then exit the car

At night, park your car under a street light or in a locked garage

When you park in a car park, try to choose one with an attendant, or/and is well lit and covered by CCTV.

Never leave behind your mobile phone or Satellite Navigation system in the car.

Only open windows half way if someone asks you to roll down the window, to stop anyone reaching inside the car

Do not keep your car documents in the glove box.

Try to avoid badly lit or quiet roads, especially if they are not roads you normally use.

If detachable, always take the radio faceplate with you

If using a remote wireless central locking system, always double check that the doors have locked before leaving your car unattended.

Report all thefts or lost items to the Police.

Martin Peters visits Polaris World, La Torre Golf

Martin Peters, the former Captain of England and scorer of ‘the other goal’ in England‘s 1966 4:2 victory over West Germany, was in Spain for a flying visit last week. As spokesperson for the travel company Extra Time Online, Martin Peters, MBE, had flown in to visit the La Torre Resort, hit a few golf balls and perform in front of the cameras for a promotional video.

Peters has his own ties with Spain as he’s owned his own place on Menorca for almost five years although, by his own admission, he does not visit as much as he’d like too, due to commitments at Spurs during the football season.

Peters may not be known to many football fans under the age of 40 but It was as an attacking, creative midfielder that Peters truly made his mark on the English game. Excellent with either foot, he also scored many goals with his head and, as England manager Alf Ramsey famously once said in 1966, he was '”ten years ahead of his time'” . He came through the football ranks, joining the West Ham United academy as a fifteen year old. At 22 he enjoyed his first taste of success as West Ham lifted the European Cup Winners Cup (now the UEFA Cup) while the following year is football folklore as he was not just part of the England World Cup winning team but also scored in the 78th minute. “I really thought I’d scored the winner, as did the rest of team, only for West German to equalise in the dying seconds and push us into Extra Time.”

It was the link with this extra 30-minutes that attracted the directors of Extra Time Online to ask Martin to be their spokesperson. Extra Time Online is an Internet based travel company specialising in luxury holidays at excellent prices. Martin was here to shoot video for their new promotion video as part of a new web campaign.

Martin is now one of ten former legends of White Hart Lane who host their own executive lounge for every Tottenham Hotspur home game along with former stars Pat Jennings, Steve Perryman and others. He hopes to be back on the Costa Blanca during the summer for more projects with Extra Time Online and also work on bringing down his golfing handicap on some of our top golf courses.

Release of 4 sea turtles to the Mediterranean from the beaches of La Mata

On Wednesday April 8th, Hundreds of Tourists flocked to witness the sight of four sea turtles being released back into the Mediterranean from Playa de la Mata in Torrevieja..

The Minister for the Environment, Water, Urban and Housing of the Generalidad Valenciana., José Ramón García Antón, and the mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, along with representatives from the Natural Park of La Mata and Torrevieja, Natural Environment Management Department and the Head of the Department of Innovation and Development

Oceanografic, Carlos Benlloch, released the four (4)Sea Turtles back into their natural environment.

Because the sea turtles were originally recovered in the coastal area of Torrevieja it was decided that they should be tagged and released back from the same area.

The Turtles have been nursed to recovery at the Centro de

Recuperación de Fauna La Granja de El Saler y en el Oceanográfico, a department of the Univerity of Valencia and were suffering from a variety of problems, mostly associated with plastic bags that had been blown into the sea and old fishing lines.

The mayor remarked on how important it is to be vigilant when around water, to dispose of garbage in the receptacles, of which there are many in La Mata and of course not to just be aware of the marine life but to obey the  Life Guards, take note of the safely flags, always keep your eyes on children and inform the Life Guards if you notice anything or anyone in difficulty in the water.

He finished by saying what an excellent job the Oceanography Department in Valencia does and the high esteem that it is held around the world. A facility that all living in the Valencian Community and Spain, should be proud of.
